Council of Europe and a Global Treaty

Posted on Monday, August 20, 2007 at 04:44PM by Registered CommenterInternet Safety Advisor | Comments3 Comments

The Council of Europe, which represents 46 countries including the United States, is pressing for a new global treaty that seeks to protect children by criminalizing specific online behaviors. The Council of Europe adopted a draft proposal last month and the treaty will be open for countries to sign in October.

The European Union is spending $60 million on a three-year Internet safety program through 2008.

$60 million over a 3 year period is peanuts to them, and there is so much that they need to do to stop predators, groomers etc.

The sooner they do something positive to bring in legislation to criminalize any activity that endangers children online the better. It really is appalling that it has got to the stage that it has, especially through the social networking sites which are so rife with these sick paedophiles.

All of these sites must be enforced to use stricter controls and better moderation, and although they are slowly starting to announce minor changes, it's like closing the gate after the cattle have escaped.

I look forward to their changes being implemented and enforced rigidly.

I do agree with Colin about the urgent need for a much more appropriate control and moderation on social network sites. On one side we need our kids get used with social network tools in order to develope future skills. On the other side we need to protect them from sick adults.
